This past Saturday The Red Cross, Greater Carolinas Chapter paired with Iredell County Health Department and Emergency Management to distributed KI pills to residences within the 10 mile EPZ zone of McGuire in Iredell County. Distribution stations were set up at two sites, Pine Lake Prep and Woodland Heights Elementary in Mooresville. Potassium Iodide (KI) is an over-the-counter medication that can protect the thyroid gland when a nuclear power plant emergency takes place. Taking the pill protects the thyroid by filling it with stable iodine so it cannot absorb radioactive iodine. This weekend the Red Cross had 12 volunteers handing out packets and had over 600 hundred cars come through the two sites!
