This weekend, our American Red Cross chapter participated in a fundraiser at Kenton Place in Huntersville called “Touch a Truck.” The event is community-based and features the Red Cross, several fire departments, medic, construction companies and local sponsors that bring out a variety of different vehicles. This year, our chapter brought a transportation vehicle, the Disaster Action Team response vehicle and the Emergency Communications Response Vehicle.
Touch a Truck is a fundraiser held each year for Addis Cure. The fundraiser is to fight lung cancer with 50 percent of all proceeds going directly to Duke Medical Center and the other 50 percent into an interest account that is swept each year and given to lung cancer research.
In addition to letting children and adults see and touch many different vehicles, our volunteers are able to talk about preparedness. They distributed preparedness information and talked about how the Red Cross helps in our community. The event attracts about 2,000-3,000 people and continues to grow each year.
